Who invented stretch leather
Stretch leather comes from a DuPont fibre, a tannery in south-west France and a Paris couturier. What each contributed, with dates and sources.
The question comes up in every search engine, and the short answer usually found there, a couturier’s name, is true but incomplete. Stretch leather is a composite material: three distinct skills were needed to obtain it, and none of the three would have been enough alone.
The fibre: DuPont de Nemours, early 1990s
The stretch in stretch leather never comes from the hide. It comes from the textile backing bonded behind it, and therefore from the elastic fibre loaded into that backing.
That fibre is a technology from DuPont de Nemours, the American chemical company behind elastane, marketed as Lycra. In the early 1990s the fibre was adapted to a new use: no longer knitting an extensible textile, but serving as the base for a hide.
Without that step, leather remains what it has always been, a material that deforms and keeps the deformation.
The composite: Graulhet, in the Tarn
The second obstacle is industrial, and it was cleared in Graulhet, the French capital of lambskin. This is where the manufacturer Cuirs du Futur is based, a bonding specialist.
The principle holds in two gestures. The hide is first split down to 0.2 or 0.3 mm, the thickness of paper, at the very limit of what a hide can take. It is then bonded onto cotton canvas made in France, loaded with elastic fibre.
The result is no longer a hide, it is a composite: the hide gives the look and the hand, the canvas gives the hold and the recovery. The composite is machine washable at 30 degrees, which stays counter-intuitive for anyone who knows leather.
The manufacturer now employs around forty people, makes 60 percent of its business from exports, holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label for living heritage companies, and supplies luxury houses including Dior and Chanel.
The garment: Jean-Claude Jitrois, 1995
What remained was turning it into clothing, and that is where Paris couturier Jean-Claude Jitrois comes in. He introduced stretch leather in collection in 1995, after a collaboration with DuPont de Nemours.
His contribution is not technical, it is about cut. Until then, leather imposed garments designed as volumes: bombers, jackets, coats. Stretch allows fitted pieces, worn close to the body. Dress, trousers, jumpsuit: garments that regular leather made uncomfortable became wearable all day.
The phrase the house still uses, turning leather into a second skin, describes the shift exactly: the garment follows the body instead of containing it.
As a direct extension of that logic, the same house launched a machine-washable leather jean in 2009. Today its composite pairs lambskin with a backing at 97 percent cotton and 3 percent elastane, and its garments are handmade in Paris.
Three contributions, one material
| Contributor | Contribution | Period |
|---|---|---|
| DuPont de Nemours | the elastic fibre loaded into the backing | early 1990s |
| Cuirs du Futur, Graulhet | splitting to 0.2 mm and bonding onto cotton canvas | early 1990s |
| Jean-Claude Jitrois, Paris | the move to fitted garments, in collection | 1995 |
This is the chain to keep in mind when a label says “stretch leather”. The term does not describe a grade of hide, it describes an assembly, and the quality of the assembly counts as much as the quality of the hide.

Frequently asked questions
Who invented stretch leather?
French couturier Jean-Claude Jitrois is credited with introducing it into fashion, in 1995, after a collaboration with DuPont de Nemours. The industrial development of the composite belongs to the manufacturer Cuirs du Futur, in Graulhet, which bonds the hide onto an elastic cotton canvas.
What year did stretch leather appear?
The elastic fibre technology was developed in the early 1990s with DuPont de Nemours. Stretch leather appeared in a fashion collection in 1995.
Where is stretch leather made?
Mainly in Graulhet, in the Tarn, the French capital of lambskin. The manufacturer Cuirs du Futur employs around forty people there, makes 60 percent of its business from exports and supplies luxury houses including Dior and Chanel.
Is stretch leather a French invention?
Yes for the composite itself, developed in France and bonded onto cotton canvas made in France. The elastic fibre that gives it its stretch is a technology from the American company DuPont de Nemours.
